Slacking, and gearing up not to slack...

Yes, I know...3 weeks in and I already didn't post once. I'll try and get on the bandwagon again though. Even though I took a one week break, I was awfully productive  during it....at least, I was gearing up to be productive.

This is one of those "calm before the storm" weeks. I'm either going to be ridiculously busy for the next week or two, or it won't be as bad as I'm anticipating. Unfortunately, I'll never know until I'm in the middle of it. Therefore, this week's motto is going to be: hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

1. The winter drama is on Saturday, so rehearsals are going to be crazy. Unfortunately, I'm missing the one tomorrow.

2. Tomorrow, I've got undetermined dinner family plans. In theory, the plans are for 6:30, but the only particular constant here is change...all I know is I'm not going to rehearsal.

3. I HAVE to figure out how the grad school tuition compensation works for ML this week. Not that it has to be paid this week, but that I'd like to know how I'm supposed to arrange payment because these things never end well when handled at the last minute.

4. I need to figure out my book situation for grad school. I know which text book I need, and thanks to my awesome Christmas gift (woo Nook!), I can rent the license for the book for a reduced price. I just need to do some snooping to find out if the "required textbook" is a "you'll use two chapters out of this" or a "you'll actually need to read this whole book." Since I can rent the textbook as a whole or by chapter, that will determine whether I spend $20 or $60...either way it's way better than the $150 the paper textbook would run me!

5. The highlight of my week - TRIVIA NIGHT!!! Love it. Good company, good fun, decent food, and most importantly $1.99 long islands.

6. Cast party for the winter drama is on Thursday. I GET TO BE A PIRATE! Thanks to the most awesome Chris Orth, I get to be this pirate: "Widow Ching Shih- Ship: "The Paradox";  Known as the Chinese Spider she has been married to several powerful well-known pirates who have all turned up dead several months later. She can quickly and silently kill any who disagree with her."
Somehow, I think I can handle this :)

7. Winter drama, I'm sure the cast and crew are going to do well. They've been working really hard and the script is hilarious! I can't wait to see everything come together and watch the audience's reactions!

8. The NHS sponsored 3-on-3 basketball tournament sign up begins this week, so I'll be busy collecting paperwork and everything in between for that.

So, here's to everyone having a good, solidly productive week, and not a drastically overwhelming one! Cheers!

Apple = fruit

There are three apples that changed the world: Adam and Eve's, Isaac Newton's, and Steve Jobs'.

No doubt, Apple changed the technology world, and no doubt it changed for the better, however, I have a confession:

I am not an Apple person.

I genuinely cannot stand using Apple products. Perhaps I haven't given myself enough time to overcome the learning curve, but the idea that I CAN do something on a Windows OS in about .3 seconds, KNOW there's got to be a way I can do the same thing on a Mac, and yet cannot find HOW to do it (probably because the names are different, the layout is different, and my patience is doing its best immitation of hydrogen in the Hindenburg).

As for the iPhone and iPad, my tolerance is higher. Being that both of these are different in their application, either a phone or a tablet, the interface is more unique and specific to the application and less Apple-y.

When I divulge my dirty Apple secret, the first thing I usually get is "But it's so EASY!" Yes, I get it, Apple is supposed to be more intuitive. I just don't find that to be the case though. I'm a linear thinker; I like my lists and my menus. The Apple interface looks messy and lacks order to me.

For the most part, I'm pretty adaptable when it comes to technology, and while I can fuction on a Mac, I prefer Apples in my lunch, not my lap.

The First on the Last

So here goes nothing....The first post (hopefully of many) on the last day of Christmas vacation.

It's bittersweet really. For as much as I love Christmas break, I always know it has to end. The food, the family time, the sleeping in (ah, especially the sleeping in).  It feels like a shame to spend the last day counting down the hours until I have to go back to work...don't get me wrong, I LOVE my job, but nothing beats spending time with family. So although this is the last day of Christmas break, and I'll return to work tomorrow, I'm going to try to continue on with something I started during vacation. Call it a New Year's resolution of sorts.

I've never been very good at resolutions, the past few years I haven't even bothered to make one. Sometimes I will make them, but simultaneously refer to them as "Lies of *insert new year here*" This year I've made two, one more in jest and one more serious:

1) Get the WiiFit to stop calling me fat.
  • I take it too seriously since it's designed to make you use it...but it's working. I think the WiiFit goal said lose five pounds in a months, so maybe that's attainable?
2) Start and keep up with a blog.
  • I've never kept a diary, and I always find myself wishing I had. I think I'll be more conscientious about it if there's feedback and other people keeping me accountable.
  • I also expect my Creative Writing students to blog once a week, so I feel it's only right that I hold myself to the same expectation. It may not be once a week, but it's a goal.

Do these seem attainable to you? Do you have any resolutions you're trying to keep this year? Any you're planning on not keeping this year?
Here's to ends and beginnings, old things and new. Cheers!
